Taken by Storm

Some of you might be familiar with the name of Storm Thorgerson, and some of you might not. Storm is one of the most prolific album cover artists of all time. He used to be part of a company named Hipgnosis, their most famous piece of work being the cover of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon."

I'm quite psyched that his album art exhibit, Taken by Storm, is in the NY area for another week or two. My intention is to check it out this weekend since I would love to see that work up close. If you live in the area, I would suggest going since it won't be in town for much longer.

The Who @ PNC Arts Center

While this show was particularly tough for me in the midst of a hellish sinus condition, I was able to tough it out and revel being up front for a great event. The PNC crowd didn't seem to have the same energy and fire that existed at the Garden shows earlier in the week. Nonetheless, we still had a really wonderful time.

Please head over to my photo page to check out a nice group of shots from this show.

For fuck's sake..

Well, I'm doing my best at trying to fight off a damn head cold. I'm not 100% sure it's a cold because I have had allergy reactions that have felt similar.

Dayquil is my choice elixir for the day. My body needs to get its crap together for another Who show tonight, damnit.

What a week!

Yes, the waiting finally came to an end, and In the Attic jumped across the pond for the New York performance. For starters, Lisa and I went to Barnes & Noble in Chelsea to welcome Rachel Fuller. The vibe was really great. After playing a few songs to an appreciative group, she spent some time to chat with us and sign some CD's. Rachel and Pete were very warm and we had a lovely talk with each of them. Jason Hare took some kick-ass photos of us during the event. Gotta love that camera.

On Thursday, we picked up our friends, the McMullans, from the airport to spend the weekend with us. After a brief rest at the abode, we ventured across the Lincoln Tunnel to make it in time for the Attic gig at Joe's Pub. Old acquaintances were welcomed and new ones made while on the line to get in. After getting inside, there was definitely some confusion with the staff as to how the whole table reservation thing worked. In the end, we were able to get some decent seats and I was able to take some nice pictures of the gig.

The official link to the Joe's Pub pics.
Note: The pictures were taken with Canon's new SD700IS camera. It's a wonderful point-and-shoot model that is very feature-rich, the image stabilization alone being worth the price of admission.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect at the gig, even given the prior In the Attic webcasts. Foy Vance started things off with a great Hendrix cover and had a great set, ending with the rest of the crew joining in on the last tune. Martha Wainwright was next in the queue, with "horse pajamas" and all. She's really quite a character, and that came through during the course of the evening. The pics are a testament to that. Next up was Pete with a truly inspired set. The highlights for me were Greyhound Girl and Let's See Action. Rachel closed the show with her set, the crew joining in for her song "Shine."

After the gig was the meet & greet portion. We were able to spend a little more time with Rachel this time around, and she was such a pleasure. She was very appreciative of the shirts we made up for her and even vogued with one. We finished up the evening with an awesome helping of sushi and then called it a night.

We enjoyed a wonderful weekend with the McMullans. It was so nice to spend time with them. Even the cats were digging the whole scene.

OK - time for a little relaxation before the two Who shows at the Garden!

Equal billing

Our other cat, Feather, made it clear to us that she was rather cross at Moon getting all the attention on the blog thus far. So, here she is in all her nicely tucked elegance.

As a bonus, here's another pic of the two of them enjoying a siesta. This pic ranks pretty high on the awwwwwwww meter.

Still got the chops!

Well, I was glad to have stopped by the Boonton Ave Grill again last night. The drummer showed up, and after the first set I was invited to get behind the kit. I think he forgot to bring his drum throne because we were actually using one of the bar's chairs. Not the ideal height, but it wasn't a major hinderance.

After I identified to Sean, the bass player, what kind of stuff and styles I play, the setlist went as follows:
  • Long Train Runnin' - Doobie Brothers
  • Breathe - Pink Floyd
  • Friend of the Devil - Grateful Dead
  • Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty

I was very pleased to see that after not playing for a few months, my tempo showed no signs of drifting, and my fills were pretty sharp. My first appearance there went over very well, prompting some of the regulars to say I should definitely visit their jam again. At this point, I'll definitely take them up on it. The other players that I've seen so far are really talented and sound great.
